Costco, Best Buy, and Target See Spending Drop, While Dollar General Defies the Downturn
February 28th’s Economic Blackout Day dented sales for some of the nation’s top retailers, Consumer Edge US Transaction data reveals. Comparing year-over-year spend growth on February 28th vs. February 27th, the data shows that Costco experienced the greatest step-down among the biggest brands, followed closely by Best Buy and Target. Large grocery chains Safeway and Publix felt the pain, while H-E-B appeared more immune. Ebay saw a decline in spend growth, while Amazon held up a little better. Dollar General actually saw an improvement in growth, bucking the trend of other major retailers.
