Size and Format as Levers following 2025 Industry Headwinds
The beer industry faced a challenging 2025, with volume declines persisting across much of the category as consumers navigated a tighter spending environment. Against a difficult backdrop, companies have placed a greater emphasis on size and format strategies to capture demand across a wider range of occasions and budgets, whether by lowering total outlay at checkout or offering more volume per dollar for value-seeking consumers. Corona Extra has broadened its offerings accordingly, aiming to attract and retain consumers across different price points as their spending behavior shifts.
Coronita Extra (7oz) Gains Traction as Size Mix Shifts
CE U.S. Scanner data indicates that while Corona Extra sales have remained negative y/y, Coronita Extra (the brand’s 7oz offering) has consistently contributed positively to total brand growth over the past year as the company continues to expand distribution. This growth has coincided with a shift in the brand’s size mix, with 7oz and 24oz formats gaining ~100bps of share at the expense of the standard 12oz, each addressing a different consumer need. The 7oz provides a lower total outlay vs the standard 12oz, while the 24oz appeals to value-seeking consumers. Within 7oz, single serve is outperforming, pointing to appetite for on-the-go occasions at accessible price points and suggesting the format may be able to grow beyond multipacks. Coronita still represents a small share of total Corona Extra sales, but the trend is consistent with broader industry efforts to operate across different parts of the price ladder to create affordability and match spending patterns.
Portfolio Breadth to Capture a Changing Consumer
Constellation has been actively expanding 7oz availability across states and formats, and the early results warrant continued attention. The contribution has not been enough to offset broader brand and category headwinds but retaining consumers within the franchise with offerings that fit their current spending behavior is critical. Product forms and formats are the levers, adding key price points across the ladder and providing more avenues to capture shifting demand.
