How Kroger’s Membership Promotion Drives Long-Term Spend and Loyalty

As grocers increasingly compete for wallet share and customer loyalty, Kroger’s premium Boost membership serves as a key strategy to drive repeat business by offering high-value perks like free delivery on orders over $35 and double fuel points. In the past two years, Kroger has held annual “Kroger Boost Bonus Days” for two weeks in July to entice new and existing customers by offering half-off memberships and exclusive discounts.

Consumer Edge U.S. transaction data shows that In 2024, the two week long Kroger Boost Bonus Days led to over 200% growth in Boost Membership Fees compared to the two weeks prior, whereas in 2025 it led to roughly 70% growth compared to the two weeks prior. While the growth highlights how the promotion remains an effective tool for membership acquisition, the slowing momentum could indicate a maturing subscriber base or increasing difficulty in converting the next wave of shoppers amid intense industry competition.

Why Boost Members Spend More

Part of the reason that Boost Bonus Days might be a pillar of Kroger’s growth strategy is that Boost subscribers tend to visit and spend much more than the average Kroger customer. Over a given year, the average Boost member spends a remarkable four-and-a-half times more than the average Kroger shopper and transacts roughly three times as frequently across Kroger’s top seven banners. Free delivery for orders over $35 and exclusive discounts appear to be compelling shoppers to spend more and consolidate their grocery shopping.

Long-Term Impact of 2024 Boost Enrollees

Shifting solely to Kroger Boost members, the cohort of shoppers who first enrolled in Boost during the July 2024 promotional event has shown remarkable spending power. Consumer Edge data shows that this group has posted double-digit year-over-year spend growth at Kroger’s top 7 banners for every subsequent month, underscoring the promotion’s effectiveness in not just attracting new members, but in cultivating sustained, high-value spending habits.

Balancing Acquisition and Retention in Grocery Loyalty Programs

Kroger’s Boost Bonus Days continue to serve as a cornerstone in the retailer’s loyalty strategy, offering compelling value that not only attracts new members but also fosters lasting engagement. While growth rates may be moderating, the spending patterns of Boost members underscore the program’s ability to deliver sustained revenue gains. As the grocery industry’s competitive landscape intensifies, Kroger’s ability to refine and innovate within its membership program could determine how effectively it retains its high-value shoppers.
