Temu Resumes Direct Shipping After Tariff Pause
Reports indicate that Temu has resumed fully-managed direct shipping from Chinese factories to U.S. consumers, after suspending the service in May due to newly imposed tariffs. In addition, the company has ramped up advertising efforts back toward pre-tariff levels. Consumer Edge US Transaction Data shows that these efforts have stabilized its market position, but a full-fledged recovery is not yet evident.
Market Share Recovery Still Limited
Market Share Uptick
Temu’s US online market share has ticked up slightly since early July, rising about 10bps to 1.1% as of mid-August. That said, share remains well below the April peak of 1.7%, highlighting how much ground the platform has lost since spring.

Customer Acquisition Shows Signs of Rebound
Weekly new customer acquisition has accelerated in recent weeks after bottoming in June, but remains about 40% below March levels.

New Customers Skewing Higher-Income and Younger
However, an apparent shift in customer mix could be encouraging: July data shows that Temu’s new customers skew younger and higher-income compared to its existing base. New customers are more likely to fall in the 18–34 age bracket and in income bands above $100k, reducing Temu’s historical reliance on lower-income, older shoppers.

While Temu’s recovery so far is modest, the improvement in customer quality could support stronger retention and spending over time—an important consideration in the current economic climate where younger, higher-income shoppers may be more resilient.
Temu’s renewed push in the US market reflects an effort to regain ground lost after tariffs disrupted operations earlier this year. While market share and new customer acquisition remain below prior peaks, the platform’s success in attracting younger and higher-income consumers signals potential for more sustainable growth ahead. As Consumer Edge data suggests, quality of customer base may prove just as important as quantity in determining Temu’s long-term competitiveness.
